Hand surgery — dissection course
Dissection on fresh, non-formalin fixed hands and forearms.
The course
The course is aimed at orthopaedic surgeons in Denmark and Sweden with an interest in or working within the field of hand surgery, and residents in hand surgery. It has run since 1998 as a regional collaboration between the Department of Hand Surgery at Gentofte Hospital, the Department of Anatomy at the University of Copenhagen, and the Department of Hand Surgery, UMAS, Malmö.
Each participant is provided with their own fresh, i.e. frozen, specimen obtained through a formal donation programme and tested for hepatitis and HIV.
Objectives
- Master the anatomy of the upper extremity from the shoulder to the fingertips, including the brachial plexus.
- Apply anatomical knowledge to validate surgical approaches and exposures.
Structure
Seven sessions across two days, totalling 12 hours of education. Each session begins with a demonstration, followed by supervised individual dissection — fingers, palm, wrist, forearm and elbow. Prosected specimens are available for reference throughout.
The programme also includes a 40-minute video on the forearm and hand, and demonstrations of surface anatomy. Loupe glasses are recommended.
